The Art of Manliness

Dear Lakewood Church of Christ men:

No doubt you have noticed a slow eroding in the quality of manhood being offered up by various sources these days. Some of it is pathetic, some clownish and some is even dangerous to the boys who adopt it and those with whom they come in contact. Anyone can see the problems that arise when boys don’t have a positive model of manhood held out to them.

At our church we are working on solutions. And we would like to invite you to be part of it! Perhaps you remember from your own life experiences, there is a time in life where manhood is still a desire—not a guarantee. Boys will do just about anything to be knighted as a man. And if those setting the bar of manhood are untrustworthy, the boys may become twisted parodies of real men.

We believe that Christian men hold the key to the attributes that transform a boy into a man. We also believe boys are anxious to find that key and be affirmed in their quest for manhood. To this end, we have created a unique event called The Art of Manliness. It is an event designed for the men of the Lakewood church to create a rite of passage that will help young teen boys understand and own the real duties and calling of manhood. Our planning team can’t do this kind of thing alone. We need your help, your support and your commitment. It may take a few hours in planning and a couple of days away from your family for you to help us with this critical ministry—but the results could mean a lifetime of difference for the boys whose lives we are entrusted with.

If we are successful in our goal of instilling the true measure of manhood during this event, it will make a huge difference in future marriages, families, workplaces and communities. We can prepare our boys to be men rather than let them stumble around and find out the hard way what it means to wear that title. Can we count on you? I hope so. If the men of our church don’t point our boys towards manhood, who will?

Thank you in advance for the contribution you will make in leading our young guys into meaningful manhood. Here is some information that you will need to know:

Sun. morning class (Winter Quarter)

Starting Dec. 4th (Sun.) we will have a multi generational men's class (starting at 9am) together in room 10. This class will focus on major attributes of "Godly Manhood".

Man to Man (Mentoring meetings) - Every other Sunday morning we will not meet at the church for a combined class but rather in small multi generational groups at various locations (coffee shop, doughnut shop, etc…) for mentoring times. We will provide everyone with discussion questions about the former weeks class.

Guy's night out -  Once a month we will plan some type of outing together as a group (gun show, action movie, poker night, Mon. Night football, etc..). This is simply a  time to provide our teenage boys a chance to get to know the men of our church in a non church setting.

Training Day  - We will also try to plan several "Training Day's" in the spring. These will be days in which we get together and teach our teenage boys some basic man skills.

how to change the oil on a car

            how to fish

how to work on a bike

            how to chop wood

how to start a camp fire
